Map Breakdown of Boston Hoods
The heart of the urban community and streets of Boston is within the historic community of Roxbury. The Roxbury area has changed from the older generations, a place that became the heart of Boston’s black culture, after many black families arrived between the early to mid 1900s.
After the movement into the city, the community and streets would later change and be known for blocks like Highland Street, H Block, Brunswick, Dudley Street, M.I.C (Magnolia-Intervale-Columbia), Castlegate Road, and others. Outside of the blocks, there apartments and housing projects like Academy, Warren Gardens, and Orchard Park.
Dorchester, a large neighborhood that is right next to Roxbury, went from being an Irish and Jewish community to being home to blacks, West Indians, and Latinos by the 1980s. Today’s Dorchester is made up of Codman Square, Fields Corner, 4 Corners, and Franklin Field.
Similar to Roxbury and Dorchester, white families in the middle part of the 1900s, left for the suburbs, making Mattapan a predominantly African-American and West Indian neighborhood by the 1970s.
Boston gangs are mostly just Boston hoods affiliations, instead of national gangs like the Bloods or the Crips. This maps show how many different areas there are in the city, more of Boston hoods than Boston gangs.
